Attitudes Towards Ageing
- Ageing is growing.
- Ageing does not cause loneliness, depression, aches and pains, incontinence, and dementia, although these problems may arise for people as they grow older.
- Ageing is never an explanation by itself of physical or mental illness.
- No diseases only affect people over 65.
The vicious circle of ageism...
The attitude of ageism produces decisions or behaviour that contribute to a stereotype that maintains the attitude towards ageing.
Ageism matters because it affects people in many ways. It affects individuals in their day to day lives, and can cause great distress. It also affects the decisions made about older people, such as Government policies, educational opportunities, and health care provision.
Age Concern East Cheshire actively promotes a positive image of ageing. Older people have considerable experience of life, and have seen and helped create much change during their lifetimes. Our work seeks to empower older people, and recognise the contributions they have made, and continue to make, to the local communities in which we live.
